About the instructor:
My name is Cuyler Anderson. I have a Masters degree in Education and a BA in English Literature with a minor in Journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso. While attending UTEP I worked for the UTEP Prospector, the university newspaper. Prior to college I served for six years in the United States Army Military Police corps. As a veteran of the current Iraq war, I understand the challenges that many of our students at Chapin face with one or both parents serving in the military and am understanding of the unique situation these students are faced with. I want you to know that I am always available for assistance with the needs of your student. I make it a habit to check my email throughout the day and I respond promptly to all emails sent to me by either student or parent.

Teaching Philosophy:
Coming to school is a right, learning is a duty and teaching is a privilege. Each student is expected to be on time with the proper materials, ready to learn and participate, and to always be respectful of others. A common saying in the military is "right time, right place, right uniform," this idea applies in high school as well. I cannot help a student who is not in class or who continuously comes to class late or unprepared. As a teacher, it is both my duty and privilege to instruct the student to the best of my ability. As long as the student fulfills their role, I will do the rest.
My classroom environment is one of mutual respect, honesty and integrity. Student centered learning is key to classroom success, thus student participation and attendance is mandatory. If the student is not in class, they cannot succeed. My primary goal is to instill critical thinking skills and to build reading and writing abilities that will ensure future success; all the while cultivating a love of literature.
Course Expectations:
EPISD recently adopted a new English textbook as well as new instructional technology (SMART boards). These materials will be regularly used in the classroom.
Students will be required to bring their agenda and student ID every day. In accordance with school policies, students are required to have their school ID visible at all times. This is for quick identification and their safety.
Policy Statements:
Late work: Per student handbook and Chapin HS guidelines, students are to receive one day grace period per day absent. This applies to excused absences only. Major assignments will be turned in on time no matter what as they will be assigned with plenty of advanced notice.
It is the student's responsibility to inform the teacher of any pending absences and to get any missed work/notes.
Listening devices and phones: All electronic devices not used for school will be confiscated. These items will be turned in to the office.
A fee of 15 dollars will be assessed for students whose devices are confiscated. This is in the Chapin handbook for further details.
Attendance and behavior: Upon the student's third tardy discipline procedures will result in accordance of school policies.
See student handbook for official policies on student code of conduct and absence/tardy policies.
In relation to behavior, students are expected to follow established school policies.
Parents are encouraged to utilize parent portal and to also contact Mr. Anderson via the email tab at the top of the page with any questions or concerns related to their student's performance, class assignments and other matters.
