Journalism 1
The purpose of Journalism 1 is to prepare students for the field of journalism i.e., newspaper, online and broadcast media occupations. Students will learn how to analyze current events and advertizing for meaning and credibility. Student projects are designed to instruct students in the creation of actual products that are found in the field of journalism. By the end of the school year students will be able to research, write and edit news stories.
Each week students will have either a current event quiz on major news stories covered in the media or they will undergo a binder check to ensure student organization and participation. Students cannot be successful in the class if they do not prepare each week. For current event quizzes, students may use sources such as CNN.com, The El Paso Times, The New York Times among others.
Students will be expected to work after school or during lunch for a minimum of two hours each week. This prepares students for the demands of Newspaper or Yearbook as well as the publishing world. (This is worth ten percent of the overall grade) They will either be working on a journalism class assignment or on newspaper stories to be published in the Chapin Chronicle HS newspaper. This class is a prerequisite for both newspaper and yearbook.
